Which Windows 11 Home install method should you use?
Microsoft offers three official routes, and the right one depends on what is on the PC today. All three come from the same Download Windows 11 page.

What do you need before installing Windows 11 Home?
You need a PC that meets Microsoft's minimum hardware requirements, a blank USB drive of at least 8 GB, a stable internet connection, a Microsoft account and a Windows 11 Home product key. Back up your files first, because a clean install erases the drive you install to.

These figures come from Microsoft's published Windows 11 requirements. The two that catch people out are TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. Many PCs from 2018 onwards have both, but they are often switched off in the firmware settings, so the PC fails the check even though the hardware is fine.
Run Microsoft's free PC Health Check app before you start. If it reports that TPM or Secure Boot is missing, look for those options in your UEFI settings before assuming the PC is too old.

How do you download Windows 11 Home from Microsoft?
Go to Microsoft's Download Windows 11 page and select Download Now under "Create Windows 11 Installation Media". This downloads the Media Creation Tool, a small program that fetches the latest Windows 11 release and writes it to your USB drive.
One detail most guides skip: there is no separate "Windows 11 Home" download. Microsoft's consumer installer contains Home, Pro and other editions in a single image. The edition that gets installed is decided later, either by the product key you enter or by the edition you select during setup.
This matters because installing the wrong edition is the most common reason a valid key is rejected. We come back to that in the activation section.
How do you create a Windows 11 bootable USB?
Plug in a blank USB drive of 8 GB or more, run the Media Creation Tool, accept the licence terms, choose your language, select "USB flash drive" and pick your drive from the list. The tool downloads Windows 11 and makes the drive bootable. Expect 20 to 40 minutes on a typical connection.
- Insert the USB drive. Everything on it will be erased, so copy off anything you need.
- Open MediaCreationTool.exe and accept the licence terms.
- Confirm the language and edition. To build a drive for a different PC, untick Use the recommended options for this PC.
- Choose USB flash drive, then select your drive and click Next.
- Wait for "Your USB flash drive is ready", then click Finish.

How do you install Windows 11 Home step by step?
Boot the PC from the USB drive, choose your language, enter your product key or select Windows 11 Home, pick Custom install, choose the target drive and let setup copy the files. After the restart, connect to the internet and sign in with a Microsoft account to finish. A clean install on an SSD usually takes 20 to 45 minutes.
- Boot from the USB. Insert the drive, restart, and press the boot menu key as the PC powers on. It is commonly F12, F9, F8 or Esc, depending on the manufacturer. If the PC ignores the USB, see how to change the BIOS boot order.
- Choose language and keyboard, then select Install Windows 11.
- Enter your product key. A Home key selects the Home edition for you. If you choose "I don't have a product key", pick Windows 11 Home from the list yourself.
- Accept the licence terms and choose Custom: Install Windows only for a clean install.
- Select the drive. On a PC with one drive, delete the old Windows partitions until you see a single block of unallocated space, select it and click Next. Check twice on PCs with more than one drive.
- Let setup run. The PC restarts several times. Remove the USB drive after the first restart if it boots back into the installer.
- Finish first-time setup. Choose your region, connect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and sign in with a Microsoft account. Windows 11 Home requires both to complete setup.
An advanced nuance: laptops and desktops that shipped with Windows often have a product key stored in the firmware. Setup reads it automatically and may skip the edition list entirely. That is convenient if the PC came with Home, and confusing if it came with Pro and you are trying to install Home.
How do you activate Windows 11 Home with a product key?
Open Settings, go to System, then Activation, select Change product key and enter your 25-character key. Windows contacts Microsoft's activation servers and, within a minute or so, the activation state changes to Active. The PC must be online while this happens.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to System > Activation.
- Expand Upgrade your edition of Windows or find Change product key, then select Change.
- Type or paste the key from your order email and select Next, then Activate.
- Confirm that Activation state now reads Active.
Prefer the command line? Open Command Prompt as administrator and run slmgr /ipk your-key, then slmgr /ato. Run slmgr /xpr to confirm the result.
Once Windows is activated, sign in with your Microsoft account under Settings > Accounts if you have not already. Activation creates a digital licence tied to your PC's hardware. Linking it to your account gives the Activation troubleshooter something to work with if you later replace a major component.
Why won't Windows 11 Home activate?
The most common cause is an edition mismatch: the key is for Windows 11 Home but the PC is running Pro, or the reverse. A product key only activates the edition it was issued for, so Windows rejects it even though the key itself is valid. Check the edition under Settings > System > About first.

A pattern we see regularly in support: a customer buys a Home key, but the PC originally shipped with Pro. Setup reads the Pro key from the firmware, installs Pro without asking, and the Home key is then refused. The fix is to reinstall and select Home, or to use a Pro key instead.

Should you install Windows 11 Home or Pro?
Home suits most personal and family PCs. Choose Pro if you need BitLocker drive encryption management, Remote Desktop hosting, Hyper-V virtual machines, or the ability to join a work domain. Everyday performance, gaming and app compatibility are the same on both editions.

Is the Windows 11 Home download free?
Yes. Microsoft provides the Media Creation Tool, the Installation Assistant and the ISO at no charge. The download is only the installer, though. To activate Windows and remove the limits on personalisation settings, you need a valid Windows 11 Home product key or an existing digital licence on that PC.
Can you install Windows 11 Home without a product key?
Yes. Select "I don't have a product key" during setup, choose Windows 11 Home and continue. Windows installs and runs, but it stays unactivated, shows an activation reminder and locks personalisation options until you enter a key under Settings > System > Activation.
Will a Windows 11 Home key activate Windows 11 Pro?
No. A key activates only the edition it was issued for, so a Home key is refused on a Pro install and a Pro key is refused on Home. Check your installed edition under Settings > System > About before entering the key, and reinstall the matching edition if they differ.
How long does it take to install Windows 11 Home?
Plan for about an hour and a half in total. Creating the USB drive usually takes 20 to 40 minutes depending on your connection, the install itself takes 20 to 45 minutes on an SSD, and first-time setup with updates adds another 10 to 20 minutes. Older hard drives take noticeably longer.
Can you move a Windows 11 Home key to a new PC?
