What is the real difference between Office 2024 and Microsoft 365?

Office 2024 is a product you buy. Microsoft 365 is a service you rent. With Office 2024 you own a fixed version that receives security fixes but never changes. With Microsoft 365 you always run the newest version and receive cloud services alongside it, for as long as the subscription stays active.

The name causes confusion. Microsoft renamed Office 365 to Microsoft 365 some years ago, but most people still search for and say Office 365. They are the same thing, and we use both names here.

Which is cheaper over time?

Office 2024 is cheaper for anyone who keeps a PC for several years and does not need the cloud extras. A subscription is paid every year, so its total rises the longer you use it, while a one-time licence costs the same whether you use it for one year or five. The subscription wins on value only if you use what it bundles.

A simple way to decide: list what you would use beyond Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. If the list includes Copilot, 1 TB of OneDrive, a Mac or sharing with family members, the subscription earns its fee. If the list is empty, you would be paying yearly for things you do not open. Check Microsoft's site for current subscription pricing, as it changes by region and plan.

Does Office 2024 Pro Plus include Copilot?

No. Copilot is available only with Microsoft 365 subscriptions, and the exact Copilot features depend on the plan. Office 2024 has no AI assistant and none will be added, because the product does not receive feature updates. If Copilot is central to how you want to work, that settles the choice.

It is worth being realistic about use, though. Many people try Copilot for a few weeks and then return to working the way they always did. If that sounds likely, a one-time licence is the lower-risk purchase, and you can add a subscription later if your needs change.

Which has better features in everyday use?

For everyday documents, spreadsheets and email, they are the same. Office 2024 already includes the functions most people associate with the newer apps, such as XLOOKUP, dynamic arrays, TEXTSPLIT and dynamic charts. Microsoft 365 pulls ahead only in newer additions: Copilot, some advanced Excel data types, and real-time co-authoring through OneDrive.

Can you switch from Microsoft 365 to Office 2024?

Yes. Your documents are ordinary files and open in either. Before the subscription lapses, download anything stored only in OneDrive that exceeds the free storage allowance, sign out of the Microsoft 365 apps, uninstall them, then install and activate Office 2024.

Is Office 2024 Pro Plus a one-time purchase?

Yes. You pay once and the licence does not expire. Microsoft provides security updates until 9 October 2029. After that date the apps continue to work but are no longer patched.

What happens to your files if you cancel Microsoft 365?

The files remain yours. The desktop apps switch to read-only mode, so you can open and print documents but not edit them, and OneDrive storage falls back to the free allowance. Files above that limit become read-only until you free up space or resubscribe.

Can you use Office 2024 Pro Plus on a Mac?

No. Professional Plus is a Windows product. Mac users need Office 2024 Home and Business for Mac or a Microsoft 365 subscription. We stock the Office 2024 Home and Business for Mac licence separately.

Is Office 365 the same as Microsoft 365?

Yes. Microsoft 365 is the current name for what used to be sold as Office 365. The subscription includes the Office apps together with OneDrive storage and other services, and the older name is still in common use.

Only to download, install and activate it. After that the apps work fully offline. Microsoft 365 also works offline, but it needs to connect periodically to confirm the subscription is still active.
