To install SQL Server 2025, download the installer from Microsoft, run setup, choose a new stand-alone installation, select an edition or enter your product key, pick the Database Engine, set the authentication mode and finish. SQL Server has no online activation step. Your product key decides the edition, either during setup or later through Edition Upgrade.
That last point is the one people search for most. If you expected an Activate button and cannot find one, nothing is wrong. This guide covers the download, each setup screen that matters, and how to apply a licence key to an evaluation or developer install without reinstalling.
Which SQL Server 2025 edition do you need?
Standard suits most small and mid-sized production workloads, Enterprise is for large or mission-critical systems, and Express is free for small databases. For testing, the free Developer editions give you the full feature set of Standard or Enterprise. The Evaluation edition is full Enterprise for 180 days.

Several of these figures changed with this release. Standard rose from 24 cores and 128 GB, Express rose from 10 GB per database, the Web edition was discontinued, and the Standard Developer edition is new. Microsoft lists the details on its page about what is new in SQL Server 2025.
Standard Developer matters more than it looks. It lets you test against Standard's real limits, so you find out in development, not in production, that a feature you relied on belongs to Enterprise.
What do you need before installing SQL Server 2025?
You need a 64-bit PC or server running Windows Server 2019 or later, or Windows 10 or later, with at least 6 GB of free disk space and 1 GB of memory, though 4 GB or more is recommended. Setup needs .NET Framework 4.7.2 and installs it if missing. SQL Server 2025 does not run on 32-bit systems.

How do you download SQL Server 2025?
Go to Microsoft's SQL Server downloads page and choose the edition you want. Paid editions are installed from the evaluation or developer media and licensed with your key, so there is no separate download for Standard. The small installer you receive offers Basic, Custom or Download Media options.
Choose Download Media and save the ISO if you are installing on a server without internet access or on more than one machine. Otherwise choose Custom, which downloads the files and opens the full setup wizard.
How do you install SQL Server 2025 step by step?
Run setup as administrator, open the Installation page and select New SQL Server stand-alone installation. The wizard then moves through edition, licence terms, features, instance name, service accounts and engine configuration. Most screens can keep their defaults. The ones below are those that deserve attention.
- Edition. Select a free edition from the list, or choose Enter the product key and type your 25-character key. The key determines which edition installs.
- Feature Selection. Tick Database Engine Services. Add Full-Text Search only if your application needs it. Fewer features mean fewer updates and a smaller attack surface.
- Instance Configuration. Keep Default instance unless you need several instances on one server.
- Server Configuration. Leave the service accounts at their defaults for a single server. Check the collation here if your application specifies one, because changing it later is difficult.
- Database Engine Configuration. Choose Windows authentication, or Mixed Mode if your application signs in with a SQL login, and set a strong password for the sa account. Select Add Current User so that you are an administrator.
- Data Directories. On production servers, place data, log and backup files on separate volumes from the operating system.
- Install. Review the summary and start. It typically takes 10 to 20 minutes.
A common issue we see is nobody being added as an administrator at step 5 with Windows authentication selected. The install succeeds, but nobody can sign in. If that happens, SQL Server has to be started in single-user mode to recover access, so it is worth a second look before clicking Next.
SQL Server Management Studio is a separate download and is not part of setup. Install it on the machine you will administer from, which does not have to be the server itself.
How do you activate SQL Server 2025 with a product key?
SQL Server is licensed by entering the product key, which sets the edition. There is no online activation and no activation server. If you entered the key during setup, you are done. If you installed Evaluation or a Developer edition first, apply the key with Edition Upgrade, which keeps your databases and settings.
- Run SQL Server setup again, from the original media or the SQL Server Installation Center in the Start menu.
- Open the Maintenance page and select Edition Upgrade.
- Enter your product key, accept the licence terms and select the instance to upgrade.
- Complete the wizard. The service restarts briefly, so schedule it outside working hours.
The same change can be scripted from an elevated command prompt in the setup folder:

What should you do straight after installing?
Install the latest cumulative update, set a maximum server memory so the operating system keeps some for itself, open the firewall only for the clients that need it, and set up backups before any real data arrives. The default TCP port is 1433. An untested backup is the most common gap we see on new servers.
Why is the product key rejected or the edition not changing?
The usual cause is a key for a different version or edition. A SQL Server 2022 key does not license SQL Server 2025, and a Standard key cannot be applied to an instance using Enterprise-only features. Setup checks for those features and blocks the change if any are in use.
- Key not valid: confirm the key is for SQL Server 2025 and for the edition you intend to run.
- Edition Upgrade blocked: an Enterprise-only feature is enabled in a database. Remove it, or move to Enterprise.
- Evaluation expired and services will not start: Edition Upgrade still works on an expired instance, and the services start once a valid key is applied.
- Setup fails early: install pending Windows updates, restart and run setup again as administrator.
Should you install SQL Server 2025 or stay on 2022?
Install 2025 for new projects where your application vendor supports it. Stay on SQL Server 2022 if your software has not yet been certified for the new release, which is still common with accounting, ERP and line-of-business packages. Check your vendor's supported versions before choosing.

Is SQL Server 2025 free?
Some editions are. Express is free for production use within its 50 GB per database limit, and the two Developer editions are free for development and testing only. Standard and Enterprise are paid editions for production workloads.
Does SQL Server need to be activated online?
No. Unlike Windows and Office, SQL Server has no online activation. Entering a valid product key during setup, or through Edition Upgrade afterwards, sets the licensed edition. No internet connection is required for that step.
Can you upgrade SQL Server Evaluation to Standard without reinstalling?
